Be a Vape Recycler.
Campaign for SENS eRecycling.
Disposable vapes are becoming increasingly popular, but their single use often leads to them being carelessly thrown away. Valuable raw materials can be recovered through recycling. This is exactly where the “Be a Vape Recycler” campaign comes in: It aims to educate and motivate the public to dispose of empty e-cigarettes correctly. Suan was commissioned by the SENS Foundation to develop this comprehensive cross-media awareness campaign. Various measures were taken to achieve this: From a concept for a return system, an informative website, a social media campaign to out-of-home measures in print and eBoards.
SENS eRecycling provides vape recycling bags and boxes designed by Suan at e-cigarette sales outlets, making it easy to collect and return used vapes. The full bags can be deposited in the letterbox. There they are collected by the post office and sent for recycling. With brightly colored stickers, stores and kiosks can actively declare themselves as vape recyclers and thus further raise awareness of environmentally friendly behavior. In a next step, eye-catching stickers will also be placed on public garbage cans to remind people that e-cigarettes do not belong in the garbage.

Web design
For the first communication measure, SENS eRecycling and Suan 2023 developed a recycling box for sales outlets and the website www.vape-recycler.ch. This offers comprehensive information that makes the topic tangible. These initial measures have increased the collection rate to 20%. The long-term goal is to achieve at least 50%. The website provides recycling collection points, vRB partners, recyclers and other interested parties with a comprehensive media kit to effectively support the implementation and dissemination of the campaign content.
The social media campaign spreads the animated key visual: excerpts of facts from the website are communicated and linked. The easy-to-understand statements playfully demonstrate the urgency of the problem and refer to the Vape Recycling Bag and the website.
Out-of-Home
Digital out-of-home measures at highly frequented locations in Switzerland support the campaign, provide additional visibility and spread the message far and wide. In mid-July, the e-Boards and e-Panels at Zurich main station lit up in green. The key visuals reached numerous commuters and travelers.
To reach the younger target group, the newly developed collection concept also includes the placement of the cardboard boxes at festivals, bars and clubs, where they are prominently displayed on the counters. The campaign also shows how design solutions and targeted communication measures can strengthen environmental awareness in society. SENS eRecycling and Suan invite everyone to actively participate in the communication and thus promote a sustainable approach to e-cigarettes.
